The 3 Biggest Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make When Scaling (And How to Avoid Them)

Jan 06, 2025

Scaling a business is exciting. It’s the moment you realize your dream is turning into something real, something impactful. But as thrilling as it is, scaling also brings a whole new set of challenges that can make or break your progress. Trust me, I’ve been there.

When I started scaling my coaching business to six figures, I made every mistake in the book. Some of them were small, but others cost me time, energy, and opportunities. And if I’m being honest, many of these mistakes were rooted in my own fears and patterns—things I didn’t even know were holding me back.

In this post, I want to share the three biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make when scaling and how you can avoid them. These lessons are drawn from my own journey and the experiences of the incredible entrepreneurs I’ve coached. If you’re ready to scale with intention and avoid the pitfalls that so many fall into, keep reading.

Mistake #1: Overcomplicating Your Business

When you’re scaling, it’s easy to think you need to do more: more offers, more systems, more everything. But the truth is, overcomplication can be the very thing that slows you down.

I remember a time when I had multiple offers running at once. I thought that by casting a wider net, I’d attract more clients. Instead, I ended up feeling overwhelmed, and my audience felt confused. I was stretched too thin, trying to manage multiple launches and marketing plans, and it showed in my results. Not only was I exhausted, but my clients were unsure of where to start or what to focus on. Overcomplication had become the bottleneck in my business.

Scaling requires clarity. Without it, you can easily lose sight of what’s actually driving your growth. By simplifying your business, you create space to refine your systems, connect with your audience, and deliver value in a way that feels aligned and sustainable. One of the most liberating decisions I made was letting go of offers that weren’t working and focusing on my core program. It wasn’t easy to let go, but the clarity it brought was worth it.

The Fix: Focus on simplicity. Scaling doesn’t mean doing more; it means doing what works, better. Look at your business and ask: What’s my most profitable offer? What’s resonating most with my audience? Double down on that. Simplify your systems, streamline your processes, and give yourself the mental space to scale with clarity. Start by mapping out your current offers and identifying which ones are delivering the most impact. Once you’ve done that, refine your messaging to make your core offer the centerpiece of your business.

Mistake #2: Waiting Too Long to Delegate

This one hits close to home because it’s a mistake I made early on. I thought I could do it all myself. I told myself I couldn’t afford to hire help, but the truth was, I didn’t think anyone else could do it as well as I could. Spoiler alert: I was wrong.

By trying to do everything on my own, I not only burned myself out but also stunted my business’s growth. I spent countless hours on tasks like scheduling emails, managing my inbox, and creating graphics—tasks that, while important, weren’t the best use of my time. These hours could have been spent building relationships, refining my coaching programs, or creating new content. The turning point came when I realized that my time was my most valuable resource. Every hour I spent on low-impact tasks was an hour I wasn’t investing in growing my business.

When I finally hired support—even just a few hours a week—it changed everything. I started with a virtual assistant who could handle administrative tasks, and soon I added more specialized help, like a social media manager and a copywriter. The shift wasn’t just practical; it was emotional. Delegating forced me to confront my fears of letting go and trusting others. It also showed me that bringing people into my business wasn’t a weakness—it was a strength.

The Fix: Delegate sooner rather than later. Start small if you need to. Hire someone to handle admin tasks, manage your inbox, or schedule your social media. Remember, you can’t afford not to delegate. Every hour you spend on tasks that aren’t in your zone of genius is an hour you could spend growing your business. To get started, make a list of the tasks you do regularly and categorize them into high-impact and low-impact activities. Then, identify which low-impact tasks you can delegate first. It’s not about handing over everything at once; it’s about freeing up your time to focus on what only you can do.

Mistake #3: Neglecting Emotional Healing

This one is the hardest to admit but also the most transformative. Scaling a business isn’t just about strategy; it’s about mindset. For years, I was stuck in a pattern I call “momentum and dump.” I’d gain traction, see success, and then suddenly, I’d sabotage my progress. Why? Because deep down, I didn’t believe I could sustain that level of success.

Scaling forces you to confront your old stories and limiting beliefs. For me, it meant addressing the fear that I wasn’t enough—that success would somehow expose me or lead to failure. I also had to face the part of me that believed success had to come with struggle. These beliefs weren’t just holding me back; they were shaping the way I showed up in my business. And until I addressed them, no amount of strategy could move me forward.

The breakthrough came when I started doing the inner work. I worked with a coach who helped me unpack my fears and identify where they came from. I journaled about my patterns, my beliefs, and the stories I’d been telling myself. I learned to recognize when I was self-sabotaging and to course-correct in the moment. This work wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. And the results were undeniable. As I healed, I stopped derailing my progress. I started showing up with confidence, clarity, and a sense of purpose that felt unshakable.

The Fix: Make emotional healing a non-negotiable part of your scaling journey. Whether it’s through journaling, therapy, coaching, or my Emotionally Unstoppable course, invest in the inner work. Scaling isn’t just about growing your business; it’s about growing yourself. When you heal the patterns that hold you back, you create space for sustainable success. Set aside time each week for self-reflection, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, the most successful entrepreneurs aren’t the ones who avoid discomfort; they’re the ones who embrace it.
